Before you sign
The Alberta instructions identify who may witness the document. The government states that this document does not need to be notarized or commissioned.
If capacity is disputed, the appointment is complex, or property crosses jurisdictions, get advice from a qualified lawyer or notary where appropriate.
After it is properly completed
Give copies to your agent, health-care provider, and other key people. Alberta also offers an optional registry for contact information—not the directive itself.
You can then record its location and the responsible contacts in BeforeHand. Uploading a file does not make it legally valid or replace delivery, registration, witnessing, or notarization required elsewhere.
